THE ART OF WAR
Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung wrote two essays, the first in 1936 after the fascists rose to power in Germany. He wrote his next essay, titled After the Catastrophe, in 1948 after the end of World War II. In these essays, Jung reflected on questions of war and peace and presented his vision of how humanity could save itself from impending disaster. In 2026, these ideas of Jung's feel disturbingly topical. Early in the century, Jung had already introduced his concept of humanity's collective unconscious, where knowledge accumulated over millennia would serve as a kind of abstract memory bank for human beings. In the work The Art of War, Jung—aided by an Ancient Greek choir and a legion of fallen soldiers—attempts to connect with modern humans through our collective unconscious, only to discover that it has been sold off as a tool for advertising on social media platforms.
Emerging into the light from our collective unconscious comes a spectrum of historical and cultural influences, where flamenco music, born in medieval Andalusia through centuries of peaceful coexistence among Jews, Arabs, and Romani people, intertwines with ancient forms of Arabic music and the most archaic choral traditions. Jorma Uotinen interprets the role of the 85-year-old Carl Gustav Jung confronting questions about the transience of life.
