CKRM + KHHL
Pekko Käppi & K:H:H:L aims to highlight the older layers of Finnish and Karelian musical traditions, blending them with modern rhythm music and conventions from various global music cultures. Folk music has lingered on the margins of Finnish culture for at least over a century, ever since the first cries of popular music. Most Finns are unaware that Europe's oldest bowed instrument, the jouhikko, is still played in Finland today.
Finnish rhyming folk songs (rekilaulu) and Kalevala-meter songs still survive in the margins, and their influence echoes throughout popular music. Käppi's K:H:H:L fuses modern rhythm music with conventions from music cultures around the world.

The performance by Compañía Kaari & Roni Martin weaves together musical traditions and styles that enrich the Finnish cultural landscape. It functions as a musical melting pot where Arabic and Jewish music meet the rhythms of flamenco and the Finnish jouhikko (bowed lyre).
The artists behind the work aim to challenge polarized thinking regarding the role of immigration and non-mainstream cultures in the Finnish mindscape. Through art, they demonstrate that anything can be boundlessly united, while also prompting reflection on the broader brand of "Finnishness", an identity where people may no longer even recognize their own heritage.
